2) Downloading 256KB or code at 9600 baud will take two minutes. Is there any
   way to speed this up? (i.e. much higher baud rate, or parallel interface).

Has anyone thought of using PCMCIA SRAM cards?  I am using them in a current
design (a datalogger) and can give some info.  The nice thing about them
is that they are battery-backup, and unplugging them from the EFI and
plugging them into a laptop for instant access to stored data and
storage of new running conditions and constants.
