Headlights

I know this is a bit far from the subject, but please bear with me.

I am converting a car with a 4 headlamp system to a two headlamp 
system due to collision damage which would be too expensive to 
repair.

Question: On high-beam, do both the low-beam and high-beam filaments 
light simultaneously, or only the high-beam filament?

Any answers, auto gurus?
