i normally hook an old fationed points type engine analyzer to that 
spot   norgays circuit will work fine  insted of a zener one could use 
2 diodes clamped to 5v and ground  1n4148 or even 1n4004  keep the cap 
in to filter out switching spikes  ;   ive got even another idea a low 
voltage  mov   .   gm could of made that out put ttl compatable
but they wanted to be able to drive existing test equipment (circa 
1974)
