This might work but I think that silver background is a polarizing
filter.

You might need a translucent polarizing filter behind the LCD to be able
to view anything.  The next best thing would be to find an old laptop
computer 8088 or 80286 with CCFL or EL backlighting.  Or, you can find
such panels from places like All Electronics Corp.
