If you are using big injectors (eg. turbo,etc) and/or chasing emissions then
I recommend 16 bit.
An easy check it have the engine idling with an exhaust gas analyser
connected. Change the pulse width by your minimum increment and measure the
difference.
If you are idling at 2.00% CO and it changes to 3.00% CO then you know you
are in trouble !!
