Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the advance was to deliver the peak
cylinder pressure at the correct time (about 15 degrees ATDC in most
engines). When the burn starts, or ends is secondary. You don't want peak
pressure too early, or you lose power, or even knock, and if it comes too
late then you've wasted power.
