I tried this about 10 years ago when I did my first 6809-based ignition   
system on a Nissan A14.
The trouble was my system wasn't particularly reliable so I had to carry   
a normal distributor in the boot and swap them to get home :-)
You also have a small amount of mechanical back-lash in the distributor   
drive.
My ideal would be phase from the crank-shaft, and an index pulse from the   
cam-shaft for TDC.
