Holden Astra Problem

     Does anyone know anything about Holden Astra SLE 1989's, a friend at 
     work has a problem with it.
     
     Don't know if there are any US, etc versions of this car but hopefully 
     someone in OZ has an answer.
     
     Essentially the problem is that whilst cruizing the car dies when you 
     try to accelerate.  When you restart, the car idles until you again 
     try to accelerate, then it dies again.  It has finally got to the 
     stage when it doesn't even idle.
     
     I think its a MAF system.
     
     Anyone got any ideas ?
