Carburetors work just fine too for most purposes.  Speaking just
of the mass produced vehicle market, today's customers want 
all sorts of additional functionality.  They want ABS and traction
control and variable rate power steering and high fuel economy,
and the government wants low emissions.  Design implementation
is a direct result of the user's requirements.

Perhaps it's this difficult precisely because it is a huge

not a huge technical surprise, but keeping it a secret 
maintains its value.

Most drivers just want to get in the car and drive.  The number
of people who care more about how the engine works than about
how many doors the mini-van has is very (sadly) small I'd wager.
