Came across the 12/96 issue of "Turbo" magazine, which contains two articles 
of interest to the group:
     -- Programmable Engine Management and Digital Fuel Injection
         discusses a box that replaces the OEM "brain" and let's you set
         your own timing/rpm , timing/MAP, fuel/rpm curves without a laptop.

     -- an handheld ECU monitor that can display all the assorted codes
         in their human-speech equivalent.

The first looks like it could be adapted to any motor with the necessary 
sensors hung on it.
