I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but thought I would mention what 
I've been using:

I have an inconel braided thermocouple made by Omega.  There was an existing 
hole near the collector of my header.  I ran the thermocouple up to an exhaust 
port from the hole (approx 18").

The thermocouple lasts about a year.  By the time I usually get around to remove
it, all that is left is about an inch of wire!

This is on a supercharged Rx7.
