Yes they work well, but can really only be used to check the 
idle mixture.  They are not designed to take high combustion 
pressures and at any rate without a dyno it is not very easy 
to load the engine and watch the color.  They are also very 
good for seeing mixture maldistribution at idle.  I found it 
good to diagniose run-on and found it was all happening on one 
cylinder.  Whether it is worth it is up to you, it made 
setting up of twin SU carbs quite easy.  Often it is difficult 
to check idle mixture with lamda sensors for many reasons the 
main ones being that they get too cold at idle and with race 
engines there is so much back flow up the exhaust system it 
will be measuring the O2 content of the air and exhaust gases.

They are not very expensive, have fun!!
