I thought (from memory) the mass energy density of propane was better 
than gasoline, but the volume energy density was poorer.  Sorry, can't 
quote figures.

The energy density of propane is roughly 96% that of gasoline by mass.  
Also, the tank has to have a minimum of 20% vapor space, i.e. it can't 
be full of fluid.
