MTBE is a known cancer causer, and is much more water soluable than
many other gasoline components.

The introduction of MTBE in the US gasoline supply has lead to a
huge increase in the number of wells polluted, and thus shut down
by, leaking gasoline storage tanks.

This is a very hot issue in California, where MTBE was first 
introduced, and where the problem is now quite wide spread.  There
has been plenty of coverage in the newspapers of this issue.
