'Tis true, in Winston Cup, they do run at 17-18:1 CRs. There was an
article
a while back (actually, a 2 part article) in Circle Track and Racing
Technology by Smokey Yunick discussing the technical feasibility of
going to
unleaded gas. They ran dyno tests of engines from 9:1 to 14.5 to 1, all
on
the unleaded equivalent of Turbo Blue.

Not only do they run ultra high compression, but they also run cylinder
specific compression ratios to compensate for fuel distribution problems
caused by the restrictor plates.
