Ford Escort - Why does "check engine" light turn on?

Typically, its one of two things...

Your O2 sensor has deteriorated, or your catilytic converter is "stuffed
up". An aftermarket cat convertor for the escort is about $120 US on the
east coast, and I'm not sure what the o2 sensor goes for. With the high
mileage on your vehicle, it really could be either.
