-> Electric clutch's on blowers. Check out the MAD MAX movie. Da
-> hero's (Mel Gibbs) Pontiac had such a blower. Twas for real.
<sigh>
The car was a Ford Falcon, the blower was an empty Weiand housing
sitting on top of the stock 351C. The belt was turned by a small
electric motor under the hood. Low budget movie, you know.
Electric-engagement clutches have been used, most notably by Toyota,
but only on low hp installations. Manual engagement has also been
used, albeit long ago, on the Mercedes SS and Bentley Speed Six.
-> Seems like a supercharger only needs a few hp at light load.
True. In fact, at high vacuum conditions the blower just freewheels,
with the major losses being the couple of hp lost in the blower drive
itself.
