Yes and no. Spica, part of Alfa Romeo, was working on such a system
before Alfa caved in to the economic advantages of the total Bosch
system. For a moment the mathematical solution looked right. 

[It would be interesting to understand the relationships between
Bosch and the manufacturers, especially in those olden days].
