After the rods are pressed, they are scored on the inside of the big
end.  Then they are broken at the mark.  That makes both sides
positively line up, and makes the rod and cap a matched set.  I think I
posted a URL yesterday for a 5 part article on the LS1, all this stuff
is covered in great detail, including problems they had with the oiling
system, etc.  The URL is
