This is exactly how the trip computers work in the series III Jaguars.

Along with the optional tripmeter on a 78 caddy seville. There's one
wire out of the trip comp that connects to the standard fuel cont. box
on fuel injected models. so trip functions could be added later if desired,
or removed leaving system functioning.
