Archiving EFI references

I'm working on putting all of my automotive reference book, magazine
articles, and other info onto cd-rom.  Can anyone recommend good
scanning/archiving software?  It has to be able to handle graphics and
it would be nice if it could compress data. It'd be a good change if I
never had to drag boxes of books out to the living room again, and my
wife would be very grateful too.
