Memory devices from Simtek are rewritable, single supply, no 
battery parts capeable of 100,000 or more store cycles to EEPROM and 
infinite read cycles.  In RAM mode they are plenty fast.  The devices 
come in standard configurations and pinouts and sizes.  They they can 
be configured to store or retrieve on software or hardware command, 
or at powerdown and powerup.  In this last mode, they come up in the 
same state as when power was removed.

Temperature under bias is -55C to +125C

I design them into everything.  So what if they cost a few bucks, 
considering time and debugging they are a bargain.  They fit where 
27xxx devices were originally used.
