Hi Tom,

I completely understand your frustration, but to take a devil's advocate
position: Some of the reasoning behind not making the ECM tuning/fiddling
readily available to the layman is related to emissions control. There is
quite a bit of fear, probably not completely unfounded, on the part of many
manufacturers that making the car "customer tunable" would lead to higher
emissions and a back lash, from "Big Brother Uncle Sam", that would lead to
government mandates/regulations. My understanding is that there are
currently plans to make memory available to record the
disconnecting/connecting of certain components, the date and time, and to
have this info readily available for anyone connecting to the diagnostic
ports (dealers, repair shops, smog stations, etc) who could then be
*required* to report you to the appropriate agency. Of course, some of the
technology is also proprietary and generates $$$ - can't just let
anyone/everyone aftermarket it until there are cheap clones readily
available ;).

Personally, I'm going to be happy when I get the work around going for the
EGR crap - people have done it!
