Diagnostic program

 I would like to build a type of trip computer for my Toyota Land Cruiser.

The one thing that I don't know much about is EFI. I would like to find a
way to provide enough inputs into a Laptop computer to be able to determine
the real-time consumption of fuel. Does the vehicles on-board computer
somehow already know this?
I am a computer programmer and electronic circuits is a hobby of mine, so I
think I have enough skills to do the work.

I am just looking for someone to point me into the correct direction.
