>Tail shafts for 727's and 904's are different at the front, but same at
the
back for the different lengths. Tail shaft housings for 727's and 904's
will interchange. You may need to use a different ball bearing for the
tailshaft in different situations, but catalogue bearings that will fit are
available. I have done this to put a DANA 300 transfer case behind a 727 in
a Scout using a tailshaft housing from a 904 in a Cherokee (with an NP
trans case!) combined with a tailshaft for a 727 which matched up (obtained
from a rebuilder.)

This is true , all it has is 4 bolts and an internal
snap-ring..................BUT , if you have a tranny w/tailSHAFT too short
for your application , a longer housing will not help you out . I assume
also you are referring to a rear bearing in the 4WD model , of which I'm
unfamiliar with . The 2WD's (if memory serves me correct , which it may not
) don't have a rear bearing in the tailshaft housing . Also , as i seem to
remember , many of the valvebody parts interchange (possibly all ) between
the 904 &727. With the exception of the earlier models (cast iron case ,
w/front & rear oilpumps). It is also my understanding that Chrysler still
makes the Trannies for use in the truck , (under different #'s) and you
could theoretically take a 727 B/RB front case , and use the guts, rear
case (overdrive unit)and make a 3sp. w/OD to use for towing . Read : low
final drive ratio (4.10-4.5 , helps low end grunt ) , and still have fairly
decent mileage an lower engine RPM at Highway speeds . you don't need a
computer to control the OD unit , merely a switch on the dash that you can
flip to engage the OD . Sorry if I'm rambling , HTH .
