broken turbo

David,

looking back through your posts you mentioned white smoke which started this whole 
discussion. Is the car an automatic by any chance?

If it is check your trans fluid level especially if this problem only seems to occur at idle.
I had similar symptoms on my VL turbo. Turned out to be the vacuum diaphragm in the
trans had crapped itself and at high levels of vacuum (i.e. idle) it was draw transmission 
fluid through the vacuum line and into the intake where it would burn.

It didn't seem to burn too much fluid but made a fair bit of quite white smoke.

Just something to check.
