How about 68HC12

Said it before.

Lansing in Circuit Cellar Ink had a very good article

Me starting from the ground up would use a HC16

I suspect the HC12 was a evolutionary step in the 
wrong direction.

I seem to remember code is upwards NOT downwards
compatible for the above chips from a HC11
