  I've worked on several trucks with I beleive the system
you're discribing.  It was a stand alone ignition timing
computer that had a knock sensor, and module.  Some
suffered from poor to terrible driviabilty, and others 
seemed to do fine,  the system was used for a limited
application, and I believe a stop gap measure.  Also
suffered from limited diagnostics,  the ones that seem
to work best IMHO were when the module was tied to
a full ECM.
