Been there, done that!  I was pointed here by the Rx7 mailing list!
The diagnostic information msut be available, at least for the aftermarket
manufacturers, under the Clean Air Act.  The point was to keep auto makers
from using proprietary interfaces to freeze out aftermarket manufacturers
and repair shops.   However, I have run into a wall of the unknown.

I have not tried Mazda Japan because I do not speak Japanese, and I have
not tried Mazda USA because of their cavalier attitudes toward their
customers ("Hell, you already bought the car, why should we care now?").

There was a lot of interest on the Rx7 mailing list for this information,
and several people informed me that they have tried to find this info
with no success.  BTW, this is my second Rx7; my '87's NA engine is much
simpler, and I have a box with a row of LED's that tells me what the ECU
is doing in the engine.  The ECU is too simple, however, and has almost
no diagnostinc capability, with the exception of a limited error code
"morse code" output.
