78xx regs have some pretty good protection built in for over current and
thermal shutdown...  I am surprised you blew it out...  make sure that it is
not plugged in backwards...(but if you actually got 5V out of it... that is not
likely either).

I think a 7805 should work just fine with 12 volts.  Not sure what you
shorted together, but that sure wouldn't help!
