note: revision to item #4 in PIC 101
"#4 Buy a Digi-Key # X902-ND resonator on page 241."
I would recommend instead a 4.0 MHz crystal digikey # X404-ND page
242. and two 27 pf ceramic caps digikey #P4842-ND page 326
This is a little easier to bread and will give better timing.
#1 Set up the radio shack solderless breadboard experimenter socket
part no. 276-174. The far left row of board labeled X will be
digital grd.
a.)Power supply
Install the 7805 5 volt voltage regulator at col. B
row 15 is out. row 16 is grd. row 17 is 12 Volts in.
look on back of package for pin id's with flat surface down,
pins facing you and lettering 7805 visible,
left to right is 12 V in. Grd in center. 5V out on right.
Strip ends of a 22 gauge red solid wire and insert in location A17
connect other end to 12V positive supply.
Connect A16 to grd col. X. connect col. X to your power supply
ground. To check operation turn on power supply.
voltage from B17 to grd should be 5 volts.
b.) crystal and capcitors.
install the crystal at C3 and C4 in any direction
install one lead of 27pf cap. at A3 the other to col X grd.
install one lead of 27pf cap. at A4 the other to col X grd.
c.) PIC 16F84
note top half circle indentation and pin 1 dimple markings on top of
chip. pin #'s go CCW from pin 1 ending at pin 18.
pin 1 will go in location F1 2 = F2 ... 9=F9
pin 10=E9....pin 18= E1
connect H5 (pin 5) to digital grd col. X
connect B5 (pin 14) to 5 V D17
connect H4 (pin 4) to 5 V E17
pin 16 is OSC1 for cystal
pin 15 is OSC2 for cystal
pin 5 is Vss grd.
pin 14 is Vdd is positive supply voltage.
pin 4 MCLR is chip reset. must be at 5 Volts for chip to start.
a high to low will restart chip. For most applications best to always
tie to 5V.
