Digests are sent every day, which means they have 100 or so messages in
them (one day's worth of posts).  Archive files are created every month,
and so are much larger.  If you catenate all the digests for a month you
have an archive file.

Yes.  Well, John used to take the old server out and use it for ground
penetrating radar experiments (how did those work out, BTW?), so some
posts were probably lost during those weeks.  But basically, yes, every
post ever made is there in the archives.
