I believe it was in Design News Magazine I saw an article on spark 
plugs with fiber optic probes in them, it was like 8 of them around 
the circumference of the outer shell, with the proper instruments you 
can watch flame shape and travel.  All this without any extra windows 
or ports into the chamber which may alter the burn characteristics.
  I don't save the back issues so I can't find it for you, but a good 
tech library may have them.

If this helps, it may be expensive.
