BMW Query

A friend of mine has a 1998 UK model BMW 540i, he thinks the diagnostic 
connector is a round plug located under the bonnet.

I think it should be a J1962 socket located within 3ft of the driver 
seat...

Anybody able to tell me who is correct, and if it is J1962 where the 
socket is located ?
