ignition advance curves

Just trying to clear this up in my head.  Would an optimum ignition
advance curve be at the onset of detonation throughout the entire advance
curve, or only at WOT, or neither??  Seems like high advance (but not
setting off knock sensor) during cruise conditions makes the engine run
rough.
