ignition advance curves

Any time peak cylinder pressure occurs before top dead center, some
perfomance is lost. Whether detontation occurs or not. The only way to
tune the spark advance to be on the razor's edge is to put a pressure
transducer in the cylinder and monitor the pressure in relation to crank
rotation. Flames anyone?
