The seminal work on this subject is a book by "Sir Harry Ricardo" "The
High Speeed Internal Combustion Engine" the first edition was written about
1926 it is Ricardo's company that designs the variable compression test
engines used by oil companies and the they have developed most of the
modern engine combustion laser photography tecniques. The book was still
being regularly updated well into the late 1970s and may well have been
brought up to date since.
It is a god read for anyone interested in combustion chamber design.
