Geez, for just warping in, you're zoomin up ta speed pretty good.

Yeah, they ARE SCR's. Thyristor is the "family name" of which SCR's are
a member. Triacs and Diacs are also "thyristors".

And you DEFINITELY get the bonus prize for noting that OPEN in patent
legaleze means "open for business" or ON, as in "open the gate so flow
can occur". So they do not use the modern terms often of "open or closed
CIRCUIT", but they will use the archaic terminology of "opens [or makes]
the earthing connection". They will often use the old term "earth"
instead of ground, as you've noted.

But YEP, you're on the right track in both cases. Good work. Now go read
some and become an expert in ION technology. Do a search using the word
"ionization" or "ionisation", and scroll down past the hits for physics
stuff, and you'll see a whole raft of neat patents on other methods
besides the "SAAB Way".
