setting ignition curves without dyno

I didn't read the original posting that that started this thread, but
I thought that you shouldn't set ignition timing on the dyno.  You can
bump up your timing to get max power on the dyno, but when driven that
timing can damage your engine.  I read this in a couple of speed rags.
