Scan Tools

Opinions wanted on all makes of scan tools
I would like to puchase one but reading the literature about them makes it
hard to choose as they all claim to be 'the ducks guts'
I can borrow Tech1 but I would prefer to have my own
What do you guys use ?
Are they pc compatible or stand alone?
If pc operated can a long length of cable be used cause I can't afford a
laptop?
