I have the same problem on my 57 pickup, only worse (for me) because
the tank is in the cab.  My solution is to put a small power steering
cooler in the fuel return line.  Chevy cavaliers were some of the
first GM cars that I know of with a "spring loaded" sending unit. 
That way the pump stays in the fuel when the tank expands.
