hot computer

A friend's 86 Bosch hot wire Volvo would only run for about 5 mins.
then crap out.  She pulled in local gas station, they said computer 
was hot, and needed new one.  The mechanic did not want to bill
her $1250 for a new one.  Said he could not find one in junkyards,
but new of person who did repair-exchange for $350.  Is this
the going price?  Seems a little high for replacing the transistor 
drivers?  She needed the car fast, so the rebuilt computer is in.
I'm wondering what caused the computer to crap out, maybe
injectors still shorted.  Are there any aftermarket replacement
computers?  Walter on the list a while back, seem to be making
a living rebuilding jag. computers.
