A "flathead" motor is also called a side-valve engine. The valves are in the
block, beside the piston. They tend to be low compression engines. Common
examples are the old Chrysler six (up to 1959), the early Ford V8 ( up to
about 1953) and the old Hudson and Rambler American (up to about 1962)
