TC's and manual trans (was: Re: Smooth strategy)

The VW version of this was called "Auto-Stick". Worked great,
required occasional microswitch and servo adjustment, RTFM
necessary, but pretty straightforward - At ~ 200,000 mi put 
in a new clutch, run it another 200K...
Weak point was it's susceptibility to enthusiasts w/ hand tools.
