Basically the solid lifter engines also got forged pistons and cranks.  I
think the Z-28 and LT-1 L-88, L-89 also had the cranks tufftrided.  It was
similar to nitriding, very thin surface hardness, and is used to improve the
fatigue strength.  The bearing surface does not have to be very hard, just
finely polished.
