The part that you snipped indicates that we're talking about water. A
pint of water weighs about a pound. I don't claim that it's exact, but
it's useful for making quick calculations in your head. For instance, a
five gallon bucket of water will weigh about 40 pounds plus whatever the
bucket weighs. If we're talking about an imperial gallon, we just have
to remember that it contains ten pints instead of eight pints. Five
imperial gallons of water weigh about fifty pounds. If you know what
you're doing, and aren't trying to confuse someone, it works fine.
