I can confirm that the instrument panel repair shop our dealership
used claimed they could read the correct mileage from an 89 Chevy
pickup dash with broken odometer.  Told the parts manager it was kept
in a chip on the back.  
Gawd I hate saying "chip" with these eloctron savvy guys around.
