Thermocouples only measure the temp difference between the two ends of the
wire.

The type K wire has to go all the way to the cold junktion. But there are
workarounds, lets say that you use ordinary wire from a connection block in
the engine compartment. Make sure that all the joints are at the same
temperature. If you use an additional thermocouple to measure this
temperature and run its wires to the cold junction and connect it in series
with all the other wires. Then the temperature of the common point in the
engine compartment is added to the value of the egt thermocouples. After
that you only need to do the ordinary cold junction correction. The total #
of wires for eight cylinders would be 11 instead of 16 by doing it this way
and nine of them are copper wires.
