REPOST - Bosch coil drive transistor....... help?

[944 Technologist]

Many Motronics use BOSCH Part #1012 as its coil drive transistor. 
It is a "selected" or "special" part for some reason? It appears 
to be just a NPN Switching Transistor. Nothing special??????

What substitutes have others been using for this part? As usual, 
thanks in advance....
