octane rating of some small alcohols

What am i missing here?... you can get gas that's 116 octane and alcohol is
always touted as being higher octane than gas. I had heard that it was
around 150. Guys running alcohol and nitrous don't use as much or any timing
retard as their gas equivalents... and indy cars run some pretty extreme
compression. 106 seems very low to provide these benefits...
